Rural Addressing

The process of re-addressing our rural areas and subsequent integration into our current E-911 system has been an extended process at the onset and involved considerable coordination with emergency services, townships, post offices, towns, and local utilities, etc. Fillmore County has enlisted the help of a consulting company who has helped re-address many counties in Minnesota.

How was my new address created?
Your address is based on a combination of your geographical location which was determined by GPS and where your driveway meets the road and where that falls on the grid. If you have multiple driveways, the point taken was from the one closest to the main dwelling.

How were the road names chosen and assigned?
The Rural Addressing Committee members assigned names to the roads according to the naming standards developed by the committee with the assistance of our consulting company. Input was taken, and names recommended by the public were used as long as they followed the naming standards. Not all roads received names; if the road followed straight North/South or East/West for its entirety, it was given a number instead of a name. The roads that did get named followed a pattern as well. Read the naming conventions and standards for more details.

When will street signs be installed?
At the September 27, 2005 Board meeting, the Commissioners awarded three contracts to the winning low bidders for signing the county (transcript of bids on file at Fillmore County Highway Dept., 909 Houston Street, Preston, MN 55965. Phone: 507.765.3854). The awarded contracts went to:

  • Lyle Sign for the sign materials and hardware at the low bid of $111,279.00, based on estimated quantities.
  • Sign posts bid to Earl F. Anderson at the low bid of $38,035.61, based on estimated quantities.
  • Addressing sign installation bid to Hiller Bros. at the low bid of $71,850.50, based on estimated quantities.

Progress Update:
Fillmore County will continue to install all intersection road signs and rural address numbers in Spring 07. We appreciate your patience during this large, complex process and look forward to the completion of the rural addressing project.

If you are a Township Official:
Please report any errors or omissions in the road signs or address numbers to the Fillmore County GIS Coordinator at 507.765.2806.

If you are a Fillmore County Resident:
Please contact the GIS Coordinator at 507.765.2806 if your address sign is missing or incorrect.

The Rural Addressing Committee public meetings were held during the fall of 2004 to talk about the road names. The meetings were organized by Commissioners’ districts, and the public was informed about the process. We encouraged those in attendance to ask questions and to give road name suggestions.

If you have any questions specific to Rural Addressing (Not about tax, title, and legal description information), please contact the GIS department by email or phone 507.765.2806.
